I am excited to share with you that I have the privilege of traveling to Kigali, Rwanda for 2 weeks March 14-31, 2016. For many years I have volunteered in inner city ministries, but I have never taken a foreign “missions trip." Who would have imagined that? Fifty-five years later and God has seen fit to change that; I’m so glad he’s not done with me. I will be working with the women of DuHope as they continue their journeys out of sex work and into a hopeful and safe future. I will also be distributing Days for Girls kits in the Kigali slums at the Nyabisindu Maternity Clinic. You can change lives by helping me reach the financial goal needed. Would you prayerfully consider helping to support me in this outreach?
I will be working with two amazing organizations that are involved with educating women - young and old – in two unique ways. Walk along with me.
Days for Girls International - Girls in developing countries miss an average of 2 months of school each year because of their menstrual cycle. With no access to pads, girls in many rural and high poverty areas are left to sit on a piece of cardboard in seclusion while on their period. Because they can’t keep up in school many girls eventually drop out. This leads to early marriage, high risk pregnancy, increased likelihood of exploitation and HIV/AIDS.
Days for Girls have many folks in the US working to make feminine hygiene kits for girls. Each kit has basic recyclable/reusable supplies designed to last three years. This gives each girl back 180 days of schooling over the course of 3 years! We will be distributing these kits to Jr. high and high school aged girls living in the slums of Kigali.
DuHope – While in Rwanda I will also be working with an organization called Duhugurane, which means “Let us learn from each other” in Kinyarwanda. Duhu, as it is called in short, is a faith based one year program designed to teach young women to discover their abilities and improve their knowledge and self-confidence. I will be teaching the women in the DuHope program business and technical skills to improve the quality of the goods they are making for sale. This is critical to their success in getting out, and staying out, of prostitution.
How can you be involved?
I am deeply convicted that the Lord has called me to go and serve for this time in Rwanda. It is not mere coincidence that my name was brought to the attention of these organizations. I would love your support as I embark on this endeavor. First and foremost, I ask for your prayers. Specifically, that you would join me in pryaing for the girls and women I will be working with. Another way that you can help is by giving financially. The trip cost is estimated to be $3,000. This will cover airfare/travel expenses, limited need for accommodations, instructional resources and supplies.
How great it is to step out of MY personal comfort zone and let the light of Christ in me be light to these women. Will you step out with me?
Thank you for your prayers and support. I look forward to reporting back to you about what God does through this outreach!
At His feet,
There are no updates for the project yet.
